Recently, the Center for Rural Affairs was awarded $62 million to provide technical and financial support to community, rooftop, and multifamily affordable housing solar projects. The Nebraska Solar for All program will be implemented statewide and include rural, urban, suburban, and Tribal communities.

The program will provide resources to help train workers to install and maintain the new installations, as well as allow the Center to increase the amount of deployed solar energy in the state by more than 60 megawatts over five years.

Among staff that will specialize in projects, funding opportunities, and more is Laura Priest, who recently joined the Center as a Solar for All associate.

“I am passionate about making a positive impact in my home state of Nebraska,” Laura said. “I'm excited that I get to be a part of a team and program that is entirely new, and implementing a program from the ground up.”

Sandra Renner, chief people officer with the Center, says Laura’s experience makes her a valued asset as the Center puts together its Solar for All team.

“Laura has a background in renewable energy, regenerative agriculture, and conservation, plus a passion for clean energy and serving communities,” Sandra said. “Her most recent roles make her an excellent fit for the new Nebraska Solar for All program.”

Laura worked as the communications director at GC Resolve and community manager and solar assistant at GC Revolt. She also has experience in client management, U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Energy Assistance grants, community outreach, and social media and communications strategy.

“In my previous job, we did a lot of collaborative work with the Center, and I always admired their work in rural communities,” Laura said. “Their dedication to rural small business, family farmers, and the environment is what made applying to the Center an easy choice.”

Solar for All staff will collaborate closely with solar and housing developers, utility providers, nonprofit partners, and lending partners. As a Solar for All associate, Laura works statewide to provide support for developing and launching this new program, especially in low-income and historically underserved populations.

“Knowing this program helps those who need it most is very near and dear to my heart,” said Laura. “In the words of Mister Rogers, ‘look for the helpers,’ and I've always felt my purpose was in helping others. In addition to expanding my own knowledge and experience, I hope to help as many people as possible, all while growing the clean energy capacity in Nebraska.”

Outside of work, Laura’s hobbies include hiking, biking, and all forms of skating, among other activities. She is also a Girl Scout troop leader.

“I have an incredibly large blended family, and a cat named FiFi LeGrey who I adore more than anything,” she said. “I can't pass up a thrift store to save my life. My plant collection is extensive, and I find a great deal of solace in tending to my houseplants and my large garden.”

Laura works out of her home in Omaha, as well as at the Center’s main office in Lyons. Reach her at 402.871.9076 or laurap@cfra.org.
