The Environmental Leader Awards honor accomplished leaders in the field of environmental stewardship. The award recognizes individuals with a proven track record and promise of future advancement in the field. The awards are an independent project administratively supported by the Center for Rural Affairs and made possible by the generosity of the Walton Family Foundation.
The Center develops a slate of nominees for the awards by inviting people to serve as nominators. The Center seeks nominations of individuals who:
- Advocate for environmental justice work.
- Work within communities of color and/or Indigenous communities
- Works to advance power, capacity and/or opportunity for women and/or non-binary individuals
The Center also prioritizes individuals who work in rural communities.
Each award recipient in 2024 will receive $25,000 for their past contributions and work. In addition, the Center will offer 2024 award recipients opportunities to meet together, build relationships, and learn about each other’s backgrounds and work.
