Des Moines, Iowa - Iowa women have an opportunity to contribute to the state’s water quality discussions at the inaugural Women for Water Gathering on Friday, Nov. 17, 2017.
This free event, hosted in part by the Center for Rural Affairs, will be held at the Holiday Inn Des Moines - Airport/Conference Center, 6111 Fleur Drive, Des Moines, Iowa, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a reception to follow.
“The ongoing debate over Iowa’s water quality consistently focuses on agriculture pitting rural and urban interests against each other,” said Katie Rock, Center for Rural Affairs policy program associate. “However, safe drinking water is a concern for communities both big and small. Healthy rivers, lakes, and streams can provide recreational opportunities that provide economic benefits across Iowa.”
Speakers include Lou Thompson, Hurricane Katrina survivor, Cedar Rapids business owner and flood survivor; Hannah Ray J, Iowa native and whitewater river surfer; and Alyson Beytien, who will speak on learning, living, and advocating.
Small group discussions and panel question and answer sessions will focus on “What worked in my community this fall?” and “What does sustainability mean in my community?”
“Every child deserves access to clean water,” said Rock. “Women for Water members believe the health of our water is fundamental to the health of Iowa. Events are focused on the health, safety, and quality of life of our families, our neighborhoods, our communities, and our state.”
Women for Water is a project of Iowa Rivers Revival, and a collaborative effort driven by water-related agencies, advocates, and organizations in Iowa, including the Center for Rural Affairs.
Registration is free, and is required by Nov. 13. Lunch will be provided.
