Last month, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced the formation of the Task Force for Reviewing Connectivity and Technology Needs of Precision Agriculture in the United States. Agricultural producers of various backgrounds and operation sizes and types are encouraged to apply. Applications are also being sought from individuals involved in providing rural internet services.

The goals of the task force include identifying broadband gaps on agricultural land, developing policy recommendations to expand broadband growth, and recommending new rules to and offering steps to the FCC for obtaining reliable data about broadband access. These recommendations are intended to improve precision agriculture, the applying of inputs at a spatial scale smaller than an entire field.

We need representatives of agriculture who will present the challenges faced by our farms and seek solutions. Reliable broadband means better technological resources for American farmers, increasing yield and cutting costs. Precision agriculture requires robust broadband services to benefit farmers, ranchers, and communities. Participation on this two-year task force will provide a unique opportunity for farmers and ranchers to shape the policies and rules which will govern future broadband deployment and growth of precision agriculture applications.

Anyone who wishes to apply should contact Jesse Jachman, designated federal officer of the task force, with questions at [email protected]. All nominations must be received by July 17, 2019.
