Himelda Lomeli has always wanted to be her own boss. After working in the cosmetology industry since 1992, she now has the independence she craved.
Owner of Himelda’s Beauty Salon in South Sioux City, Nebraska, Himelda knew her business could thrive in that area.
“After moving here from California, I discovered there was a big gap in Nebraska,” she said. “I saw the opportunity to have my own business since there weren’t many Hispanic salons in the area and the demand was high.”
Starting out in South Sioux City in 2000, Himelda rented a station in a salon for three years before she opened her own business as a sole proprieter.
With the help of the Center for Rural Affairs, Himelda has purchased property for her business, and received training on how to run her salon to its fullest potential.
“First, I attended training classes for businesses, offered by the Center,” she said. “Then, with their guidance, support, and financing, we were able to buy the business building.”
Veronica Spindola, Latino loan specialist with the Center, has worked with the salon owner.
“Himelda has worked hard to build her business from the ground up over the years,” said Veronica. “Through the Center, she’s been able to take part in classes covering online business training, basic computer knowledge, and business plan basics, all which have helped her run her business smoothly.”
At Himelda’s Beauty Salon, clients can receive numerous services such as haircuts, chemical treatments (dyes), facial treatments, waxing, massages, eyelash extensions, and more.
Himelda hopes to continue growing her customer base, and is thankful for the loyal customers.
“We are so very grateful to the Siouxland community for their response and the support we have received from them during all these years,” Himelda said.
The business owner is also optimistic about the future of her salon. For now, it’s just Himelda and her husband working full-time.
“We have grown, thanks to our constant effort and dedication,” she said. “Our experience has been fabulous, thanks to the Center. We are very thankful and proud to be Center clients, and to have been able to receive all the support they provided.”
