When Rachael Barlow and Heather Veik started discussing the idea of going into business together, one of their top priorities was to provide a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for all ages to meet, work, and create.

At the time, they had no idea their shared dreams and visions for the future would lead to them running a successful business and beloved community gathering place in Neligh, Nebraska.

They tossed around many business ideas before settling on one that fit just right. As coffee lovers, Rachael and Heather knew they found the right path forward. And with financial assistance provided in part by the Center for Rural Affairs, they opened River Mill Coffee Co. in September 2021.

“Our vision for River Mill was to create an environment that didn't feel like rural Nebraska, yet also promotes and celebrates rural Nebraska,” Rachael said.

Since opening, they have taken great pride in being an active part of their community.

“Their motto, ‘Come fill your cup with community, fellowship, inspiration, and a unique barista experience,’ really fits not only the business, but the owners,” said Kim Preston, director of Lending Services with the Center. “Rachael and Heather have given back to their community, participated in many community events, and have referred clients to the Center to further entrepreneurship in northeast Nebraska.”

They have donated items and gift cards to local causes and hosted events. They have also partnered with other businesses to draw more people into Neligh to explore the town and shop locally.

Because of their dedication to growing their business and giving back to their community, Rachael and Heather were chosen to receive the Center for Rural Affairs 2023 Entrepreneur Award. The award recognizes entrepreneurs who have received Center services and achieved remarkable success in business while demonstrating the values of innovation, community leadership, and social responsibility.

Rachael and Heather say their journey so far has been a labor of love and that all the blood, sweat, and tears have been worth pushing themselves to stay on the right track with their business goals.

“This award is a very sweet reminder that we can do hard things and that the self-doubt that tries to come through isn't worth listening to,” said Rachael. “When we were informed of the news, so much tension just fell away. There is something deeply meaningful in feeling seen, and it’s very reassuring that our vision is helping others. It really means the world.”

The business owners truly enjoy connecting with their customers and learning about them, as well as spending time with each other and their employees.

“We get especially excited when we have travelers come through and we get to hear stories and backgrounds,” Heather said. “Our absolute favorite part is all the sore stomach muscles we get because our days are full of laughter from the best friendships.”

Rachael and Heather have no shortage of dreams for their shop’s future, and they’re constantly brainstorming how they can continue to bring together and support the community of Neligh.

They say they wouldn’t be where they are today, or able to plan for tomorrow, without the Center’s assistance.

“The Center has been completely invaluable to us,” said Rachael. “We truly wouldn't be here without the Center. We would like to give the entire staff our most heartfelt thanks, not only for the opportunities, but also for the belief, the support, and the shared vision of the incredible things rural living can offer.”

Heather and Rachael were presented with the Entrepreneur Award on April 10.
