Just over two years ago, a tornado ravaged the northeast Nebraska town of Pilger. It left destruction in its wake. In a marvelous testament to rural grit and ingenuity, the community hosted a “Grand Reopening Celebration” on Saturday, June 18, 2016.
The newly reopened Midwest Bank was central to the day’s activities. At the ribbon cutting, Senator Deb Fischer and a representative of Senator Ben Sasse spoke, in addition to local citizens.
Senator Fischer recalled touring Pilger right after the tornado. In the rubble of one home, she saw a wooden sign with the word “Family” prominently displayed. That spirit was evident throughout the recovery. And it was certainly on display at the grand reopening.
Six businesses hosted open houses. So did the new fire hall, library, and the historical society. A new community center is under construction as well.
Festivities included a bounce house, face painting and clowns for the youngsters. Free barbecues and a street dance capped the celebration.
You could feel the hometown pride and tremendous gratitude from the townspeople. If you are traveling on Highway 275 in northeast Nebraska, stop in and see for yourself.
