MALVERN, IOWA—Southwest Iowans interested in local foods and rural communities are invited to attend a bus tour showcasing rural grocery stores in the area. This free event is hosted by the Center for Rural Affairs.
The bus tour is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., starting and ending at Mulholland Grocery, 409 Main St., in Malvern.
This roundtrip ride includes stops at three rural grocery stores: Mulholland Grocery (Malvern), Logan Super Foods (Logan), and Blue Cow Market (Neola). One Farm Market (Logan) will also be a stop.
During these stops, attendees will hear from managers and owners about why they have invested in rural communities by owning grocery stores. They will get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to make grocery stores thrive in rural communities and can take those lessons to their own hometowns.
“Rural groceries stores are more than just ready access to healthy food,” said Deborah Solie, project associate with the Center for Rural Affairs. “They provide jobs and generate tax revenue, among many other benefits. This tour will provide attendees with the opportunity to learn more about the challenges rural grocery stores face and why they are vital to healthy, vibrant communities.”
Attendees are asked to dress warm and wear comfortable shoes. Lunch will be provided.
Registration is due by Wednesday, Jan. 15. For more information, contact Solie at [email protected] or 402.870.1133, or visit cfra.org/events.
